Faux Finishing LA brings much more than just ordinary decorative paining to Los Angeles and its surrounding areas.

Our repertoire includes much more than just rollers, brushes and sponges.

In 1988 Faux Finishing LA’s owner studied abroad in Rome, Italy and received a Bachelors degree in the fine arts while he was working for a painting and restoration company in the Philadelphia area originally founded in 1915. There he developed skills in the decorative painting and faux finishing field under the apprentice of a master finisher who had originally began his career during the great depression. While with this company the owner of Faux Finishing LA worked on several projects for the Pennsylvania Historical Society, including The Brewer Estate, Fetters Mill as well as helping to restore Benjamin Franklins Grandfather clock.

A decade before the big box stores even began selling “faux” products Faux Finishing LA’s owner was learning first hand how to make Venetian Plaster from scratch by heating calcium carbonate dust in ovens and making custom made brushes by hand, (sometimes out of feathers) as well as many other tricks that can only be learned hands on.

Since starting his own business in the 1990’s the owner of Faux Finishing LA has creatively combined his knowledge of traditional materials with contemporary ingredients to refine and make adjustments on the classical finishing and decorative techniques. As part of the education he was required to know how to make paints from their pure ingredients of pigments, solvents/carriers and binders. This knowledge has been combined with contemporary ingredients to bring decorative painting into the 21st century.

One very popular technique uses hand made acrylic glazes to recreate the glazing style of classical European painters. This creates a complex layering of translucent colors that take on the qualities of a complex range of hues and change considerably in different lighting.

After thirty years of working on homes and business projects as small as refinishing jewelry boxes to the entire interiors of country clubs have given Faux Finishing LA expertise in every style and technique so if the style you may be looking for isn’t pictured on this website we have it covered.

We are a decorative painting company with thirty years experience so these photos are just examples from the looks created in the last few decades. Faux Finishing LA (formerly Los Angeles Area Faux Finishing) is a full service decorative painting business offering a wide range of specialty services.

Faux Finishing LA has thirty years experience hand-tinting paints in a variety of context.

These custom colors can be used to define your house or be part of the “branding” of your business, setting it apart from all others. Even specialty paint stores offer colors only within a limited range of saturation. Fully desaturated colors must be hand-tinted on site to engineer the greatest possible effect in relation to the space, the usage, and the lighting—expressing the character and intentions of the client. We also have experience creating unique custom colors with unconventional colorants—including pure powdered pigments, high-end permanent artists’ colors, and modern iridescent and interference pigments. Take a look at some of our custom tinted colors on our Custom Hand Tinting page.

Over the years we have become experts at repairing other peoples faux finishes.

Even developing a hybrid technique of hand tinting plasters and covering them in hand tinted glazes to create flawless venetian plaster repairs. Enabling us to repair plaster finishes, even small areas and blend them into the old finish where as many of our competitors have to refinish entire walls to get plaster finishes to match properly. Take a look through some of our matching skills on the Repair page.

We also create hand made textures for a wide range of different purposes, some of those can be found on our Custom Textures page.

We have extensive experience in implementing large scale jobs as well as great skill navigating difficult situations that often present themselves in custom built homes. Photographs from a few of our past jobs showing how we used our skills and equipment to work around and protect homeowners property are on our Difficult Situations page.

More details about many of the processes used can be found on the Frequently Asked Questions page or read some of the comments made by clients on the Testimonials page.
